Rurutu Humpback Whale Expedition

French Polynesia | Austral Islands

Rurutu is considered one of the most intimate and tightly regulated humpback whale destinations in the world. Located in the remote Austral Islands of French Polynesia, the island allows only a small number of licensed whale boats on the water, creating an experience that is calm, respectful, and focused entirely on the whales.

This is a fully organized, small-group expedition. Once you arrive in Rurutu, all core logistics are handled, including accommodation, daily breakfast and dinner, lunch on whale days, airport transfers, and a fully private, licensed humpback whale charter. The focus of the week is simple: maximize respectful, in-water time with whales in one of the most restricted destinations in French Polynesia.

This expedition is led by In Depth Expeditions founders, each with extensive experience in open-ocean freediving, wildlife encounters, and expedition logistics. One of the expedition leaders is a professional filmmaker and underwater photographer with prior humpback whale expedition experience in the South Pacific.

In-water support is provided throughout the week to ensure safe positioning, calm encounters, and respectful interaction in accordance with local regulations.
